Race Day Readiness

Race shirt, bib and cuff for the 2016 Joy In The Cause 5K

2016 Shirt, Cuff and Bib

It can be unnerving getting ready for a race, no matter the distance, especially if this is your first. Here are a few race day tips to keep you level-headed and on your toes:

  • Friends – Invite your family and friends to join the race and run/walk together.
  • Dress Up – Create a unique beach-themed costume - or support your favorite cause - and enjoy yourself during the race and at the post-race End-of-Summer Bash. Individual and group costumes are a great way to show off your love for Joy In The Cause, Rustic Cuff, or your favorite cause.
  • Shoes – Keep those feet happy with a quality pair of running shoes.
  • Race Bib - Wear the race number on the front of your body during the race. The race number for the 5K race also contains a timing chip for the electronic timing system. Don’t fold the number as you could damage the timing tag.
  • Watch the Clock – Give yourself ample time to get to the start line. With over 2,500 people arriving at the same time there will be delays. Follow instructions from officers and volunteers directing traffic.
  • Have fun – Whether this is your first or 100th race this event will be fun for kids of all ages.

  • All parking will be to the west of the River West Festival area near 21st Street. Jackson Avenue will be closed for the race. To access parking you should first go to Southwest Blvd, then turn east on 21st Street. Volunteers will direct you to your parking area. There will be a separate area for handicapped accessible parking.
  • If you purchased the VIP Package, show the volunteers your VIP parking pass and they will guide you to the VIP parking area inside the River West Festival Area.
  • Nearby streets will close early so plan your route ahead of time. Jackson Avenue will close at 5:00pm. The 23rd Street Bridge, Boulder Avenue and Main Street will close at 7:00pm.
  • Most people will arrive at the race about 45 minutes before the start. Give yourself ample time to park and get to the start line. Don’t let your first race be a sprint to the start line!

Our aid stations are manned by the best volunteers in the area. Most are runners themselves and like to give back to the community at the Joy In The Cause 5K.

The Joy In The Cause 5K wouldn't be possible without the help of great volunteers. Sign up for a shift at our VolunteerSignup website. Don't worry if you are new to the volunteer scene. You'll be working alongside and learning from the best of the best.

We have shifts available Friday afternoon and evening on September 14th. There are many opportunities for families to work together. Students can volunteer for school or club volunteer hours.

Team Challenge

This year we are rallying all teams!

Get your school, business, organization, or friends involved and form a team! First Responders, Police, Fire, Life Flight....are you up for the Team Challenge?!? All you have to do is decide on the name of your team and invite everyone to register under your "Team Name". You will still be timed as an individual (no awards in the actual race for teams).

There will be special Just-for-Fun Team Awards given for Best Tutus, Most Joyful Spirit, Largest Team, Most Creative Outfits, and Most Superheroes!

NEW THIS YEAR!! Joy In The Cause wants to bring awareness to your Cause and help others learn more about it.

Organizations can register (for free) to set up a pop-up tent in our first-ever Village of Causes where groups from all over the area are invited to hand out brochures, giveaways, prizes — let creativity be your guide — in an effort to share your mission with our runners and fans.

At Joy In The Cause, your Cause matters! This year we want all those causes to be recognized! Cancer, Heart Babies, Down Syndrome, Parkinson’s, Autoimmune, the list is endless! Whatever your Cause, get a team together to support it!

We would love for you to represent your Cause at this year’s race by putting up a table/tent with information about your Cause.

Spots are limited. If you are interested in registering your organization for a space in the Village of Causes send an e-mail with the name of your organization and a brief description of your Cause to mfuller@joyinthecause.org.

Your Cause must be a registered 501(c)(3) non profit. We will contact you within 30 days of submission to let you know of approval.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make sure that I get a Rustic Cuff bracelet?
You must register by August 20th to get a limited-edition Rustic Cuff. Cuffs are not available if you register after August 20th.
What is a Virtual Run?
A Virtual Run is one that you do on your own at any point and time because you cannot make it to the event. Please do not sign up for the Virtual Run and then try to use your number to run on race day.
What is the age limit for the races?
There is no age limit to either the 5K or One Mile Fun Run. However, we ask that young children be supervised at all times as it will become dark and very crowded.
What is the course time limit?
The course will remain open until the last walker finishes. However, if you cannot walk 3.1 miles in one hour and 15 minutes, we suggest you enter the One Mile Fun Run instead.
Are strollers allowed in the races?
Strollers are only allowed in the Fun Run. We ask they start towards the back of the start group for safety of all runners.
What types of costumes are allowed?
Any costume that will allow you and the entrants around you to run safely is permitted. Many children attend this event so keep them PG or better.
Will there be awards?
Yes, there will be awards for the following groups:
  • Top 3 overall male and female in the 5K will receive a unique Rustic Cuff Gift Set
  • Top 3 in standard 5-year age groups in the 5K will receive a Rustic Cuff Gift Card

Can a friend or a family member run with me if they did not enter the race?
No. All participants on the course must be registered for that event.
Do I need a timing chip?
Yes, for the 5K race. The 5K is an electronic chip-timed race. Chips will be on the back of your race number and must not be removed.
Where do I wear my race number?
Your race number must be visible on the front of your body. If you think you may shed a shirt or a jacket during the race, we recommend that you safety pin your number to the front of your shorts/sweats/tights/costume.
